SUFY®

Fight the Aphids & Spider Mites Chemical-Free Way

SUFY® is a plant health promoting product that is mainly aimed against aphids and spider mites.

It is a contact supplement based on hygroscopic volcanic clay, working on a physical principle – water absorption from the surrounding area.

Compared to conventional chemical-based products, SUFY® comes with a number of advantages. Since its effect does not depend on the chemical composition but rather on its microscopic structure, this product does not harm the environment or human health. While conventional pesticides leave behind unwanted chemical residues, SUFY® evades this problem (clays are a common part of the soil).

The effectiveness of SUFY® increases with the evaporation potential, i.e. with rising temperature. This proves useful at temperatures above 23–25°C, when commonly used pyrethroids completely cease to work. To ensure optimal coverage, please consider adding a wetting agent.

Principle of action:

SUFY® works on the basis of hygroscopic clays. These have a specific, fully porous structure (see the image), giving them the ability to extract water from the surface on which they adhere, and release it into the air. Extremely fine particles (0-10 µm in size) cover the surface of tiny arthropods particularly well, and thus dry them out quickly.

Aphids and spider mites are susceptible to hygroscopic effects due to their weak cuticle (skin) and small body size, which results in a relatively large surface area relative to their mass. This product is friendly towards non-target species - it has no effect on other invertebrates with thicker cuticle, larger body mass, etc. This means that aphid predators such as ladybugs, hymenopterans, drone flies, etc. are kept in the field/orchard.

SUFY® also has no negative impact on bees.

MICROSCOPIC STRUCTURE: The image shows a model of the molecular structure of SUFY®, created by 3D printing. It clearly shows how the lattice of silicon and aluminium atoms is permeated by a multitude of nanopores. In particular, these are behind the product's excellent ability to absorb and transpire water.

Production:

The raw material for the production of SUFY® is mined in a surface quarry with deposits of volcanic clay, and further processed at high temperatures. The first phase of drying and activation of the raw material takes place at a temperature of approx. 400°C. This is followed by a delicate grinding phase at temperatures of approx. 200°C, during which microscopic particles of 0-10 µm are produced. This production process ensures the unique physical properties of SUFY®: the relatively large surface area of the resulting product is determined by the combination of its granular nature and the porous structure of the individual particles.

EFFECT ON APPLE APHID • Before application, thriving colonies of apple aphid (Aphidula pomi, left) were present on the leaves, three days after application only mummified individuals (right) remained on the spot.
COMPLETE MUMIFICATION OF APHIDS • complete drying of the aphid bodies occurs after 2 to 4 days, but already within the first tens of hours after application, a fatal loss of water can be observed, which is manifested, among other things, by a color change (in this case green → brown → almost black).
TOP HEXAGONS • Among the ladybugs, we can find a number of prominent aphid predators. They feed on them both as adults (Coccinella septempunctata in the picture on the right), and in their larval stage as well (a larva of Hippodamia ladybug on the left).
BOTTOM HEXAGONS • While the parasitic Aphidius wasp lays eggs directly into the bodies of aphids (right), the Epistrophe drone fly oviposits in their immediate vicinity - aphids then become food for its larvae (left).

Dosage and conditions for application:

The application dosage is 3-3.5 kg/ha. For orchards, hopyards and vineyards, calculate the hectare dose per hectares of sprayed leaf area (LWA). This product can be used 1-2 times per season. It is absolutely necessary to employ a wetting agent, in order to ensure the correct effect. Always empty the sprayer when applying, do not let it settle overnight.

The efficiency of SUFY® depends on the water evaporation, and therefore on the ambient temperature, humidity, and the strength of the wind.

While pyrethroids cease to work at temperatures above 23-25°C, SUFY is highly recommended under these conditions.

Shelf life: 2 years from date of production
Storage temperature: +50C to +300C

Packaging:
• Paper bag, content of 15kg
• bucket, content of 3kg

Many conventional pesticides suffer from low specificity, meaning they are toxic not only to pests but also to other invertebrates. Thanks to a carefully designed production process, SUFY® targets aphids and other soft, small-bodied pests, such as spider mites, and does not harm animals with different body parameters. There is therefore no need to worry about the health of beneficial insects on the site, including many of the natural enemies of aphids / spider mites (see below).
